Radiation: How much is harmful?

How dangerous to human health is radiation from the crippled nuclear power plant in Japan? How does it compare with other nuclear accidents and our everyday radiation exposure?

Not all radiation is the same, so scientists use the ‘sievert’ to measure the health risks of radiation. A one-sievert dose of radiation would cause immediate radiation sickness. But most radiation doses are much smaller, so you’ll see them measured in millisieverts or even smaller microsieverts.

1 sievert = 1000 millisieverts
1 millisievert = 1000 microsieverts

I'm living on Kyushu at present and have no idea what the radiation levels are down here. I continue to hear conflicting reports - people telling me to head back to New Zealand immediately and others saying there's absolutely nothing to worry about. Can anyone tell me if readings have been taken this far south and whether or not I should be concerned?

NIGHT OF 15TH JUNE 1994 KAKRAPAR ATOMIC POWER STATION (INDIA),FLOOD WATER ENTERED IN PLANT, FOTUNATELY FOR EVERYBODY PLANT WAS NOT IN OPERATION. MANOJ MISHRA OPERATOR AS A SECERATY OF RECOGNISED EMPLOYEES UNION IN THE PLANT DISCUSSED WITH MANAGEMENT FOR SAFETY AND SECURITY AND FUTURE ACTION TO AVOID ANY SERIOUSNESS WHILE PLANT IN OPERATION BUT IS PAYING THE PRICE FOR HONESTY AND COURAGE FOR ASKING,AS HE WAS DISMISSED AND STILL FIGHTING CASE IN THE INDIAN COURTS FOR HIS INTEREST FOR THE COUNTRY AND ENTIRE GLOBE . IF THIS POINT WOULD HAVE TAKEN POSITIVELY AND SERIOUSLY BY MANAGEMENT AND DISCUSSED ALL OVER THE WORLD IN 1994 , THE RESULT EVERYBODY CAN THINK. TAKING POSITIVELY AND SHARING INCIDENTS HELPS TO IMPROVE THE SYSTEM .

We should convert to Solar as well as wind power all over the world..I wrote my main postgraduate seminar on the drifting continents and the causes like earthquakes, volcanoes, tectonic plates etc and I am still trying to keep up with the subjects which I majored in. It is very bad to have nuclear reactors in an unstable area. Those reactors are situated on the most unstable "crack". We cannot fight the forces of nature.Natural forces is a "given" like in mathematics. Martha Potgieter.

This is recklessness to project nuclear power stations which blow up at switching off the electricity at any case.
It is necessary to introduce into a design the nuclear power stations the mechanical devices which would reduce the power of a reactor to the level at which compulsory cooling is not necessary.
It is necessary to introduce into a design mechanical devices which would liquidate possibility of negative development of a situation in any case.
And I know how to do all this.
