Alcohol: An Occasional Tipple!
While many mediterranean Europeans who enjoy a glass of wine with their meals might disagree, alcohol in general cannot be a part of a healthy way of living.
In February 2009, cancer scientist Naomi Allen of Oxford University published a study in the “Journal of the National Cancer Institute” which proves that the regular drinking seriously increases the risk of cancer. Heavy drinking also damages the liver and pancreas which could destroy the organs or also enhance the risk of cancer.
Between ten and forty grams of alcohol per day are defensible. One large glass of red wine contains of 20 grams, so the occasional sip could be beneficial. The so-called Mediterranean diet – following the French approach of enjoying little amounts of wine along with their meals of fish, vegetables, and unsaturated fats, actually reduces the risk of heart diseases.
But, alas, this is no carte blanche for over indulging. As always, less is more, and six-packs should be found on well-exercised abdominals rather than in the fridge.
