Don't Idle the Engine

If you're stuck in a jam, switch the engine off if you expect to be there for more than a minute or two. By having the engine switched off, even for a short period, you will save more fuel than is lost from the burst of fuel involved in restarting the engine.

In cold weather, don't waste fuel by idling the engine, drive away immediately to warm up the engine. If necessary, use a block heater to keep your engine oil and coolant warm, making the vehicle easier to start. (Photo: Reuters)
