CARE International

The partnership between Allianz and CARE International, which began in the wake of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, continues with a micro-insurance project in India.

CARE International's humanitarian work now reaches over 55 million people in 66 countries

Immediately after a devastating tsunami struck the shores of the Indian Ocean on December 26, 2004, Allianz employees responded with a wave of generous donations. Many of these donations were passed on to CARE International, a humanitarian organization working to rebuild lives and livelihoods in the affected coastal regions in India, Indonesia, Somalia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.

But the cooperation did not stop there. In 2006, Allianz and CARE began a three-year partnership to provide micro-insurance to over 75,000 people in one of the areas worst hit by the tsunami - the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Together, CARE and Allianz will continue to develop and distribute low-cost life and non-life insurance products to thousands of people living in Tamil Nadu, many of whom have never had access to insurance of any kind.

In partnering with Allianz, CARE brings decades of experience to the table. Founded in 1945, CARE now reaches over 55 million people in 66 countries. CARE responds to disasters and works to tackle the underlying causes of poverty so that people can become self-sufficient. Recognizing that women and children suffer disproportionately from poverty, CARE places special emphasis on working with women to improve basic education, prevent the spread of HIV, increase access to clean water and sanitation, expand economic opportunity, and protect natural resources.

CARE and Allianz look forward to continuing their work in India, and to exploring and discussing these critical global issues together on the Allianz Knowledge Partnersite.
