Issue January 23, 2008
Dear Reader, This month, global elites flock to the Swiss Alpine resort of Davos to lay out this year's economic and political agenda at the World Economic Forum. Delegates will be busy fretting over ongoing financial turbulences and other global risks - such as energy shortages and political instability - that threaten to disrupt economic growth. Our Top Story focuses on another emerging risk - food security, a climate-sensitive issue that might take a backseat to fears of global recession.

In our "Climate Agenda 2008" series, we introduce some important climate change stories we'll be following this year. Finally, Markku Wilenius, Professor of Future Studies at Finland's Turku School of Economics and a new member of Allianz Group Development, gives us his forecast for the year to come.

News to Use For a Truly Green TeaYou don't have to buy an elaborate solar cooker to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee in an eco-friendly way. Just fill your kettle with as much water as you need for one or two cups, and avoid using energy to heat up unnecessary surplus amounts. If everyone in tea-loving Britain took heed, it could save enough energy to run half the street lighting in the country, according to the Energy Saving Trust. If you drink a lot of tea, why not use an insulated thermos to keep it hot throughout the day?
