Dear Reader,
Tired of bad news about climate change? This month, we focus on what can be done do to curb greenhouse gas emissions, cut back on energy consumption, and increase the energy efficiency of our homes and businesses.
We look at solutions that could help reduce fossil fuel consumption, including algae bioreactors to more efficient aviation and streets that produce energy. Some scientists, however, are dreaming up even more radical solutions. We analyze whether “far out” ideas like space mirrors and cloud seeding are viable options to stop global warming or just science fiction.
The International Energy Agency just released a new study on the technology needed to halve CO2 emissions by 2050. Co-author Dolf Gielen tells us how it can work and what it will cost.
And finally, our colleagues from Allianz subsidiary Fireman’s Fund tell us about their green building insurance and why it pays to build and remodel green.
Enjoy reading our newsletter, and don’t miss next month’s issue on population growth.

The Oil Diet
Cutting back on energy and oil consumption is possible. According to a report by oil company BP, Germany has reduced its consumption of energy from oil, gas, coal, nuclear, and hydropower by a record-breaking 18.5 million tons of oil equivalent in 2007. Germany used 5.6 percent less energy from these sources than in 2006.

Green Homes: Go Native in Your Garden
If you want to reduce water consumption by up to 30 percent, consider getting rid of that water-thirsty lawn. Native plants have adapted to the local climate and are usually more drought-resistant and require less water and fertilizers. According to the Chicago Academy of Sciences, U.S. households collectively spend about 27 billion dollars a year on their lawns.

Manipulating Nature for a Cooler Planet
Some scientists say it’s time to think about "last resort" options to stop and reverse global warming. But geoengineering proposals like cloud seeding, space mirrors, and iron fertilization have risks of their own.
