Could you live off a dollar a day? It is hard to imagine, but until recently, one out of every six people did. Now, for the first time in years, the number of extremely poor people has fallen to under a billion.
The trend is encouraging, but the United Nations goal to halve hunger and extreme poverty by 2015 remains utopian. July 2007 marks the halfway point of this project, but Africa especially is still lagging behind. Our partners from Jeffrey Sachs’s Earth Institute at Columbia University give us their point of view on how we can achieve more.
