16. August | Global South Conference and Exhibition - Meeting the Millennium Development Goals through Sustainable Development

Where: Stellenbosch, South Africa

The Global South 2009 Conference and Exhibition will take place from August 16 to 19 in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Under the theme “beating the drum for inclusive economic development”, the conference aims to facilitate measures that help achieve 4 of 8 of the Millennium Development Goals: eradicating extreme poverty and hunger; promoting gender equality and empowering women; ensuring environmental sustainability; and creating global partnerships for development. Further, the conference seeks to bring together ethical trade small producers, NGOs, and environmental organizationsto engage and form partnerships and exchange best practices.

16. August | World Water Week

Where: Stockholm, Sweden

From August 16 to 22, experts from 100 countries will assemble in Stockholm, Sweden, during World Water Week in a global effort to improve human, welfare and the planet's health. The theme for 2009 is “Accessing Water for the Common Good”.  On the agenda are plenary sessions and panel debates, workshops, seminars and side events organized in collaboration with different international organizations, and exhibitions and festive prize ceremonies honouring excellence in the water field.

31. August | Third World Climate Conference

Where: Geneva, Switzerland 

Under the theme “better climate information for a better future”, the third world climate conference from August 31 to September 4 in Geneva will focus on how humankind can benefit from the advances in climate prediction and knowledge. The conference is building on improved understanding of the climate system and advances in the science of climate prediction and information that can contribute to the wellbeing of society. It will also focus on services that enable decision-makers to better manage the climate opportunities and risks associated with extreme climate conditions and allow communities to improve their ability to adapt to long-term climate change.
