1. October | International Day of Older Persons

October 1 marks the annual International Day of Older Persons to recognize the world's rapidly ageing population and the growing importance of older people in society. According to the World Health Organization, the number of older people in cities is expected to increase from 56 million in 2000 to over 908 milliono in 2050 in developing countries.

Ageing as a privilege but also a challenge requires joint approaches and strategies. Designating October 1 to the Aged, this day seeks to emphasize the need for the development and implementation of appropriate ageing policies and programmes and to identify innovative initiatives for enhancing living conditions.
