1. July | Midway Point for Millenium Development Goals

Adopted in 2000, the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for the year 2015 form a blueprint agreed to by all the world’s countries and all the world’s leading development institutions.

July 2007 marks the midway point in this global struggle to halve extreme poverty, halt the spread of HIV/AIDS, provide universal primary education, promote gender equality, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, protect the environment, and to build a global partnership for development.

5. July | UN Global Compact Leaders Summit

The UN Global Compact Office convenes a two-day summit on leadership and corporate citizenship in Geneva, Switzerland. Chaired by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the event will feature business leaders, government ministers, and heads of civil society.

The summit will be about current trends in corporate responsibility, public policy challenges and comprehensive solutions to effectively address climate change etc. Leaders from the financial markets will present environmental, social and governance issues that are of importance to business performance and competitiveness.

8. July | World Conference on Disaster Management

The 17th World Conference on Disaster Management will host educational sessions on pandemic planning, lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina, standards, risk managment, data forensics, crisis communications, the future trends in disaster management or emergency health. The conference runs July 8-11 in Toronto, Canada. http://www.wcdm.org/


16. July | Boulder Microfinance Training Program in Turin

The Boulder Institute of Microfinance holds its 13th annual Microfinance Training Program from July 16 to August 3, 2007 at the International Labor Organization's training center in Turin, Italy. Hundreds of microfinance professionals and others will participate in the three-week program, which is comprised of 40 different courses in English (with another 17 courses taught in French).

22. July | High-Level Meeting on Forests and Climate

The Australian government is hosting this three-day international meeting in Sydney to address the issue of deforestation, and highlight its importance on the global climate change policy agenda. Representatives from over 60 countries are expected to attend. In April, the Australian and Indonesian governments launched the Global Initiative on Forests and Climate.

25. July | First Asian Conference on Microinsurance

The 1st Asian Conference on Microinsurance will be held on July 25-26, 2007 in Manila, Philippines. The conference theme is "Meeting the Insurance Needs of the Masses with the Right Socio-Business Strategies." The conference is sponsored by Sun Microsystems, and supported by Munich Re Foundation, PlaNet Finance, the Philippine insurance commissioner, and the World Bank's CGAP Working Group on Microinsurance

31. July | UN Debate on Climate Change

The United Nations General Assembly will hold a two day informal debate on "Climate Change as Global Challenge" in New York.

Speakers include Sir Nicholas Stern (Lead-Author Stern Report), Yvo de Boer (UNFCCC), and Han Seung-soo (UN Secretary-General’s Climate Change Envoy)  

On 1 August, UN Member States will present their national strategies and international commitments to address climate change.
