Germany Records World's Biggest Cut in Energy Use in 2007
According to a report by oil company BP, Germany has reduced its consumption of energy from oil, gas, coal, nuclear, and hydropower by a record-breaking 18.5 million tons of oil equivalent in 2007, 5.6 percent less than in 2006. China's primary energy consumption rose by 7.7 percent compared to 2006.
Increasing Temperatures Could Bring Merlot to Britain's Vineyards
Climate change could help Britain become a major wine-producing country by the end of this century, according to a new book by UK geologist Richard Selley. Increasing summer temperatures could make the UK suitable for wines like merlot and cabernet sauvignon, typically produced in warmer regions.
Google world map offers climate change information
Google Earth, a map of the earth seen from space, now offers a view of the expected impact of climate change. Using climate date from Met Office Hadley Centre, the map shows temperature change over the next hundred years, offers information on local impacts, and possible actions against further warming.
Global wind capacity grows 27 percent in 2007
Global wind power capacity rose 27 percent in 2007 to over 94,000 megawatts according the Worldwatch Institute. Growth was particularly strong in China, United States, and the European Union, though global wind leader Germany experienced lackluster growth in 2007.
Sea Level Rise Underestimated
Sea levels will rise 0.8 to 1.5 meters by 2100, three times higher than previously estimated. This follows a new study conducted by the British Proudman Oceanogaphic Laboratory. Scientists had so far underestimated the impact of melting ice shelves and polar caps.
Study: Soot Responsible for 60% of Global Warming
Soot could cause up to 60 percent of the warming effect related to human CO2 emissions, a study published in Nature revealed. The 8 million tones of soot released into the atmosphere annually have created "hot spots" in Asia. Up to 35 percent of global soot emissions come from China and India.
Study: Reservoirs Have Taken Up Excess Water
Sea levels would have risen much faster if dams and reservoirs would not have stored much of the excess water triggered by global warming, scientists say. A study from Taiwanese researchers estimates that some 30,000 reservoirs built since 1900 have prevented a sea level rise of some three centimetres.
